| Name: | Kanou Martin (AU) |
|---|
Character: Kanou Martin
Series/Fandom: Yuugiou GX
Original or Alternate: Alternate
Age: 15
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Sexuality: Straight
Appearance: At first glance, Martin might not look his age. Small and perhaps a bit paler than most, he may come off as frail to some and could easily be mistaken for being a few years younger than he actually is. (Rei is convinced it’s because he eats too little, though Martin denies this.) He has blue eyes and brown hair in something like a bowl cut, but with the edges slightly upturned. Typically he wears a black shirt under a yellow jacket that is buttoned at the top, with a strip of white leading from the collar to the back of his jacket lined in a darker yellow and with decorative fringed shoulder pads of the same darker yellow shade. Sometimes, including his arrival in Econtra, he will wear his Duel Disk (a maroon version, less streamlined than those in canon). His belt is black, with a silver buckle, and attached to that is a box for his deck. His pants are also black, folded into cuffs at the bottom, and he wears yellow and black boots.
Personality: Martin can be pretty blunt. Emotionally, he isn’t particularly mature, and subtlety is not one of his strongest points. Between having been emotionally isolated since a young age and his tendency to occasionally overlook finer details, bluntness is the surest way to get things through to him. Despite that, Martin is easily influenced by what others say and expect of him, and takes on those expectations for himself.
When dealing with others, Martin could be seen as shy. Initiating contact and trying to make friends is not an easy task for him. Starting with when his father left him and his mother, Martin has harbored a long-running loneliness that makes him cautious about having friends and other company: he would appreciate both, but believes that they will go away or desert him too and leave him alone again. Finding friends in Academ has made him more optimistic again, but the possibility of losing them brings Martin down again.
Abilities/Strengths: In addition to being a duelist, Martin is also able to summon Exodia the Forbidden One, a powerful Duel Monster, through dueling using one of his decks. As Martin gathers the pieces of Exodia, his mind is influenced a little more. When all five pieces are assembled, Exodia is unleashed and Martin’s mind becomes unstable to reflect its power. (When this happens in Econtra the effects on Martin’s mind remain, but Exodia’s summoning is limited to a temporary summoning as a miniature spirit form of Exodia, with no more power than a duel spirit—specifically, able to sense supernatural going-ons, communicate with Martin, and interact with other spirits, but little else.)
Weapons: Martin has two Duel Monsters decks. The one he mainly uses centers around taking control of his opponent’s monsters and switching them to his side. The other, much less frequently used deck is based on summoning Exodia. Because of his connection to it, it would be very difficult for Martin to be separated from the Exodia deck even if he wanted to.
Weaknesses: Though he’s a good duelist, Martin is about as physically strong as he looks—that is, not very. He’s little better emotionally; having gone most of his life feeling there was nobody he could relate to well (or vice versa), his interpersonal skills aren’t much good. Unless he’s dueling or otherwise being serious, Martin’s also a big pushover and it won’t take much coercion to make him do something unless he has an especially big problem with it.
History: (Though it didn’t come through in the writing of this history as well as I’d hoped, the universe in this AU is meant to be partially based on that of Judai and Yubel’s past lives in episode 155 of GX.)
In one of the eleven dimensions where some Duel Monsters could go about as humans did, Martin was born to the sister of the ruling king of a small country and her husband. Martin was discovered to have been born with the ability to unseal and call upon Exodia, a monster so powerful that it had been split into five parts and sealed in the past. From a young age Martin witnessed his parents quarreling with one another, loudly and frequently, until one day his parents finally divorced and his father went off to travel around, willing to leave his son behind to get away from his ex-wife and the controversy from their divorce.
While Martin had Exodia while under control even at six years old, the possibility of disaster unnerved most of the people around him, and Martin felt alienated because of it. This combined with his rank (fifth in line for the throne, behind the king’s four children) and others’ criticism and magnification of his frail physique and inattentiveness only served to increase that. He developed a thick enough skin to survive, but as a result Martin withdrew into himself, believing he was alone and friendless and would be so for a long time.
At the age of thirteen, Martin was betrothed to Princess Rei, a younger princess of Academ, another country. When he was fifteen years old he finally traveled to Rei’s country for the first time, where he found a surprise: also in the country was his father, still traveling. Neither of them initiated contact with the other, however, and instead Martin began meeting Rei’s friends (other prominent figures in the royal court), and other foreign nobles who had recently arrived.
To his surprise, Martin fit into Academ better than he ever had at home. Rei was pushy, but he liked her in at least a platonic way and he got along just as well with the others. But after a few months, just as Martin was getting used to Academ and beginning to believe he wasn’t so alone anymore, word of Exodia’s power reached one of the other visiting foreigners, Amon Garam. Wanting the power for the purposes of his own kingdom, Amon wrote a note to Martin challenging him to a duel, hinting at threats to Rei if he didn’t use Exodia in hopes of drawing out and taking Exodia’s power.
The duel was Martin’s first time using the Exodia deck, though he’d had it for as long as he could remember. He was apprehensive at first about dueling with it, knowing the havoc it could unleash, but as the duel went on and he collected more pieces Martin grew bolder and more ruthless. When he gathered all five, Martin successfully unsealed and summoned Exodia, and at that point both Martin and Exodia were out of control. He won the duel; Amon wasn’t killed in the end, but he was injured badly.
That was when Rei entered the scene, having found Amon’s note. Still unbalanced and high on the rush of power Exodia had given him, Martin was about to turn on her when he was taken to Econtra, Exodia thankfully being returned to his deck and all effects nullified in the process.
